***BAHA’s Annual Members’ Meeting*** The annual members’ meeting of BAHA is scheduled for Tuesday, June 25, 2024, in the auditorium of the Roscomare Road Elementary School. The meeting will commence promptly at 6:30 pm. Please plan to arrive early for check-in. Councilmember for District 5, Katy Yaroslavsky, is scheduled to speak, along with representatives from Metro who will be speaking on their congestion pricing study that could directly affect our neighborhood (for good or bad, the devil is in the details!). We also expect LAPD and LAFD to attend and perhaps other speakers. All residents of Bel Air Hills are invited to attend, but only BAHA members as of May 31th will be able to vote. Official notice of the meeting will go out to members shortly.
***BAHA Members’ Party is Back – June 13th!*** Due to Covid and then lack of a venue, the annual members’ party has not been held over the past few years. BAHA is pleased to announce that this year the Party is back with a great new location. AvaKro, the new restaurant located in the shopping center across from the old Bel Air market will be the site of the 2024 annual members’ party. All BAHA members are invited to this adults-only party on Thursday evening, June 13, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Invitations have been sent to members, so if you are member and missed yours, please check your email, or contact BAHA. A variety of beverages, including wine, will compliment a wonderful buffet dinner – all included with your BAHA membership. RSVP’s must be received by June 9th at the latest. Members, please RSVP to [email protected]. Non-members still have time to join BAHA and receive an invitation, just go to www.baha.la to join!
June 13 will be a wonderful opportunity to meet, greet, wine and dine with neighbors – we hope to see you there!
***Sepulveda Transit Corridor Project*** The May Newsbites provided information to attend Metro in-person or virtual meetings that were held last month, that were to focus on the monorail alternatives and gather feedback about the possible elimination of Alternative 2. In the event that you were not able to attend either the in-person or virtual meetings, Metro has now provided video from the virtual meeting. The virtual meeting video can be viewed at: https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/jhuydlp0gybwonqn4o958/2024_Spring_STC-Meeting-Recording-ENG.mp4?rlkey=j2swn66bu94dhbvi4ibpsbenu&e=1&st=20wic73r&dl=0
***Sober Living Facilities*** In the March Newsbites, we described a situation involving one of our members who informed us about a neighboring property for lease that was being advertised for possible use as a “sober living facility.” This led BAHA to research the regulations regarding these types of facilities and we were surprised to learn that State law requires the City to treat residential alcohol and drug abuse treatment facilities with six or fewer residents the same as a single-family residence. This means that these facilities are allowed in residential areas and the City is not allowed to require any special use permits or zoning variances that are not required of single-family dwelling. Because studies have found that smoking rates among those with substance abuse disorders are as high as 75%, BAHA is concerned about the fire danger from such facilities in our neighborhood, which is in a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. BAHA has written a position paper which is being distributed to our state and local representatives, requesting that state law be changed so as to prohibit these facilities in VHFHSZ or, at a minimum, that they be subject to stringent additional requirements to decrease the fire danger to the surrounding neighborhood.
If you would like to read the position paper, a copy is attached here:
Baha.Position.Paper.pdf
If you are concerned about the fire danger posed by these facilities in areas such as ours, and would like to contact your state and local representatives with your concerns, please feel free to use BAHA’s letter, or any part of it, in your communications.
***Stay Informed*** In 1999, the City established the Neighborhood Council system, which was intended as a way of ensuring that City government be responsive to the different concerns of Los Angeles’ varied communities. There are currently 99 Neighborhood Councils in Los Angeles and the one for our area is the Bel Air Beverly Crest Neighborhood Council (BABCNC). The BABCNC serves as an advisory body to the City and BAHA has 2 representatives on the 34 member BABCNC Board. Meetings are open to the public and the public can attend in person or by Zoom. You can learn more about the BABCNC at www.BABCNC.org and sign up for the BABCNC agendas and monthly newsletter here.
